Networking over Thunderbolt. Ethernet device missing.

I have two Intel NUCs (NUC10i7FNH).

I'm trying to do set up a network over thunderbolt between them for the purpose of implementing DRBD and keep the replication traffic off network they are attached to.

Running an up to date Debian Testing.

The thunderbolt device is recognized:

However I don't get a network interface to configure. Nothing is printed out in the logs or dmesg.

I did read a stack overflow post or something where by a guy had to boot into Windows and configure the thunderbolt device not to sleep, then it worked in Linux. I haven't tried that. These machines don't have Windows installed.

Aside from installing Windows, I'm lost on what to do next. Can any one help?
