Ontario's police watchdog has terminated its investigation into an incident last month that saw a 19-year-old Hamilton man seriously injured after plunging from a hotel balcony.

While Hamilton police responded to the unit where the man fell, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a press release Friday there is patently nothing" to suggest any officer was criminally liable for his injuries.

Whatever the reason for (the man's) course of action, it is evident he alone is responsible for the injuries he incurred," Joseph Martino, director of the SIU, said in the release. Accordingly, the file is closed."

The Spectator has previously identified the man as Bulend (Typhoon) Dikici, who was behind the wheel on June 3, 2020, the night passenger Mackenzie Mann, a 20-year-old McMaster University student, was killed.

On May 28, Dikici pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death and three counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

He was on bail May 2 when he plunged from a window at The Sandman Hotel on Centennial Parkway as police arrived to break up a party at around 3 a.m.

SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said at the time the hotel manager called police to report a noise complaint.

The officers attended the fourth floor and heard loud music and voices coming from a room," she said. While the officers were still in the hallway, an individual opened the door and notified police that a guest from the room had fallen from the window."
