You can now easily resize text in Google Messages.

What you need to know
  • The Google Messages app has finally gained the ability to resize text in conversation threads.
  • As long as you have the latest version of the Messages app, you can now use the pinch-to-zoom gesture to adjust the font size.
  • You will no longer have to adjust the system font size for bigger text in the Messages app.

It is finally possible to use the pinch-to-zoom gesture to adjust the font size in Google Messages for Android. As reported by several users on Reddit, Google appears to have added the ability to the Messages app with a recent update (via XDA Developers).

Until now, it wasn't possible to adjust the font size in Google Messages on an app level. The only way to increase or decrease the text size in Messages was to adjust the device font size from system settings.

As you would expect, the feature works similarly to the resize text option in Google Chrome and a few of the best Android messaging apps. Once you open a conversation thread, you can change the text size by pinching out using two fingers. You'll have to pinch in to return to the default font size.

The text size that you set will apply to all threads in Google Messages, but some UI elements such as the send button will remain the same. It is also not possible to adjust the font size in the main list view.

The feature doesn't appear to be rolling out via a server-side update, so you should be able to access the functionality on your Android phone by updating to the latest available version of the Google Messages app from the Play Store. That said, it could still take a few more days for the feature to become available for everyone.

The ability to adjust font size isn't the only new feature that has made its way to the Google Messages app recently. Just last week, Google announced two new additions to the Messages app: starred messages and end-to-end encryption for all users.
