telnet mysql have problem

I use ubuntu and mysql 5.5.8,

I tried run the below command at prompt but have error

Code:telnet localhost 3306Code:error

5.5.58-0ubuntu0.14.04.1HO?,^uS{4C7(_,WT!Co'mysql_native_passwordI tried run the below command to fix , however , it still have the same problem when telnet

Code:mysqladmin -uroot -p flush-hostsWould advise what is wrong in my case .
