Linux equivalent of (Macintosh) "Time Machine?"

Macs have an excellent, unobtrusive, backup facility called "Time Machine." Attach an external drive to your computer and ... "it just works.TM" Your work is reliably backed-up every hour in an automatically-rotating schedule of hourly, daily, and weekly backups, and you don't even notice that it's happening. (You can back up to network-attached drives, too.)

A recent client is a creative-arts agency which has standardized its workflows on Macs and Linux [desktops] - according to the needs of the various pieces of software which they use in their pipeline. They've asked me to recommend a Linux-side backup solution that fills as many of the objectives of Time Machine as possible. (Compatibility with TM backup repositories is not required.) The software should sit there, quietly running in the background, quietly doing its thing, with an easy way to search through the archives and find material. They don't expect it to "look like" TM, but they want it to be just as unobtrusive and easy to use, and of course reliable.
