linux mint from disc to drive

Hi, I've got Windows on my hard drive, occupying one of 2 partitions, and Mint on a cd which is usable but I'd prefer to have it on the free partition. Can anyone advise please as I've made several unsuccessful attempts to transfer Mint, install it, and have a choice of systems on booting the pc? thanks in anticipation.
