A rant about themes
by Mantra from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5M3M2)
Ok. This will be a rant. I apologise in advance. But... why is it so ****ing difficult to change the colours on a modern Linux desktop (on Ubuntu, at any rate).
All I want to do is change the colour of the window titlebars. That is all.
And it has taken me *2 hours* of searching so far. And I still haven't found out how to do it.
On the way, I have discovered lots (most of which I never wanted to know) about how to use gresource extract, the differences between gtk2, 3, 3.2 and 4, and the difference between a theme and a theme engine. I don't care about any of that.
All I want to do is to change the colour of window titlebars. I don't care about themes or theme engines. I don't want to go hunting through some obscure binary format to find the obscure css setting I should change, find it, and then find that setting is specific to gtk3.2 and I need to find a different setting for each other gtk variant.
All I want to do is to change the titlebar colour in the default theme so it doesn't blend in, because I keep closing the wrong window by mistake.
Why is that so ****ing difficult???
(For anyone who says "oh it's easy", no it isn't. If you think it is easy, here is the challenge: using Ubuntu with Xfce and the "Yaru-dark" theme, change the background of the window titlebars for all windows to a lighter colour. If you can do that in a format I can reproduce on my machine in less than 30 seconds, I'll buy you a pint of beer, or equivalent value in chocolate*)
