Do you think I should use disk encryption ?

I am a desktop user. I don't use any laptops. I am the only member of my family who uses this computer. I take backups once a week. I have never used disk encryption before. I use a separate /home. In case of distro reinstallation I just copy all my data from my old /home/old to /home/new. I am worried that if I use encryption I will no longer be able to do this.
Is my assumption correct ? In your opinion should I use encryption ?
