problem with midnight commander

Hi, I read the suckless recommendations and discovered Midnight Commander for me as the perfect file browser. However I have really great problems with custom key bindings...Some custom bindings work like Delete Key for deleting a file, but for example ctrl-m to oben the menu bar does not work or if I set "View" to enter/return does nothing at all...
I've encountered the problem both on debian buster and on a fresh minimal install (only sys tools) debian bullseye installation with only mc installed.
I already created bug here: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugr...cgi?bug=908287 but the response time seems there really slow and I want to get rid of dolphin/nautilus/thunar/... as fast as I can :)
Additional info: I am using Debian all in english but with the german keyboard layout - if this is maybe relevant.
