startx doesn't start X on Debian 10

Hi all,

We had a power cut last night and my system died. Upon rebooting it doesn't want to start X when I run startx. The message states:
Code:xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)
xinit: connection to X server lost

And yes, I run Debian 10 on a Mac mini - but up to last night it worked fine, so that is not the cause of the issue even if it is potentially related.

Please note that before last night's power cut I hadn't rebooted this system for around 3 months. So it's possible that the sudden forced shutdown caused the problem, but it may also be something else that happened in the 3 months previous that I simply didn't notice because I wasn't rebooting.

I use Awesome WM which starts with a very simple .xinitrc script in my home dir (I don't use a login manager - just boot to console and startx):
