Question about the amd64 architecture and the Intel processors

Hi,
I want to buy a new laptop. At this moment I have a laptop with the i386 architecture.
There are some programs I want to use that are only made for the amd64 architecture. The laptops I came across only have a Intel processor. Can someone tell me if the programs made for the amd64 architecture can be run on Intel processors?
