gnome option doesn't show at homepage

I've installed gnome and then rebooted. On the start page, only my account shows. No gnome options. And another thing, after typing
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell ubuntu-gnome-desktop
and saying Y ,there was no confirmation box. The whing just stopped and I let it sit for 10 mins and then rebooted.
I'm exetremly new to this...please help me
