UPDATE: Hamilton under extended heat warning

Hamilton is in for a hot and humid week.

The City of Hamilton has issued an extended heat warning for the city.

On Monday morning the city said the heat warning will remain in effect indefinitely until temperatures dip and a cancellation notice is issued.

Heat and humidity is expected to continue into the middle of this week, with minimum daytime temperatures of 30 to 32 degrees Celsius, with humidex values 37 to 40. Nighttime minimum temperatures are expected near 21 degrees Celsius.

The hot weather is expected to stick around until at least Wednesday night.

Thursday is expected to offer some relief, with temperatures in the high 20s C. Then overnight Thursday, the temperature is forecast to drop to lows in the mid-teens.

The city and Environment Canada are warning that the forecasted weather could bring reduced air quality.

Heat and humidity could cause the Air Quality Health Index to approach the high risk category."

Extreme heat affects everyone," the federal agency wrote in their heat warning.

Hamilton is opening its cooling places, marked by signs that say Cool Down Here," at the entrance.
