hdd dock can't see new raw hdd

Trying to partition and format a new raw hdd in a usb 3.0 dock but can't see them. Tried two new Seagate 4T drives and a new 1T Seagate. Dock works with a 1T hdd with NTFS files. Lenovo M72 compact desktop with MX linux. Dock is connected thru a 4-port usb 3.0 hub.

Hoping to avoid putting the hdd's into a desktop to partition and format and adjust permissions. Could dock firmware (re. linux filesystems) be an issue with the dock? Computer has no problems with 8T external usb hdd's so hdd size does not appear to be an issue.
