Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Sam Ehlinger suffered a knee sprain during Friday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions, but he doesn't need surgery and will be out five-to-six weeks, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Colts drafted Ehlinger in the sixth round and the Texas product impressed at training camp. He earned first-team snaps during the preseason alongside second-year passer Jacob Eason as the two compete for the backup role.

Indianapolis traded for former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz this offseason, but his status for Week 1 remains unclear after he underwent foot surgery in early August. Wentz's return timetable was initially set at 5-12 weeks.

Ehlinger completed 67.7% of his pass attempts for 288 yards against three interceptions through three preseason appearances.

The Colts' quarterback depth chart also features a fourth option in veteran Brett Hundley. The deadline for NFL teams to cut rosters from 80 to 53 players is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

Indy kicks off its 2021 season on Sept. 12 against the Seattle Seahawks.
