No sound from a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop

Possibly this might be a hardware question, but the software controls the hardware.
I have Linux Mint Mate 20.2 Uma. The specifications of the Dell Inspiron 531 are given here https://www.findlaptopdriver.com/spe...-inspiron-531/ The OEM motherboard is said to be an ASUS M2N61-AX.
In Sound Preferences the device is shown as "Built-in Audio Disabled Off". There is no way to turn it on.
I have only used this computer and this version of Linux Mint for one or two weeks. Shortly after first using the computer I remember turning off something to do with Nvidia audio from the Startup Applications Preferences, because I did not think the computer had any Nvidia cards. Then a few days later, finding the computer was silent, I turned it back on and got sound!
This has not survived the computer being turned on and off, and now there is no sound.
Now looking at Startup Applications Preferences I cannot see anything to do with Nvidia audio that I seem to remember, although I could easily be mistaken. Perhaps I confused it with other entries for Nvidia that are in the list.
Currently Startup Applications Preferences has PulseAudio Sound System enabled, which is not what I remember, although I could be mistaken.
How can i get sound?
Thanks.
