Vikings, Smith agree to reported 4-year, $64M extension

The Minnesota Vikings and star safety Harrison Smith signed a contract extension, the team announced Sunday.

The pact will keep Smith in Minnesota for four additional years and is worth $64 million, reports NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Smith is now reportedly locked in with the Vikings for five more seasons. He'll earn $22.5 million in 2021, the highest salary for a safety in NFL history.

Overall, Smith's new $16-million average annual salary places him second among safeties behind only Seattle Seahawks star Jamal Adams, according to Spotrac.

Smith was set to play the last year of a five-year, $51.2-million extension he inked in 2016.

The five-time Pro Bowler has been a key member of the Vikings' defense since joining the team as a first-round pick in 2012. The Notre Dame product, who's made 130 regular-season appearances in Minnesota, amassed 89 tackles and 10 pass breakups last season. He also recorded five interceptions, tying a career high.
