Change desktop environment

Hi guys! One thing interests me. Can I painlessly change entire desktop environment in Slackware for example from KDE to Xfce with slackpkg remove kde and then slackpkg install xfce or even remove KDE and install MATE? In other Linux distributions that I tried I found it difficult to change DE without any pain or leaving mess in the system.
