Fake Banksy NFT sells for £244,000

There's a fashion now for artists to sell "non-fungible tokens" that give a kind of ownership of their work. Anyone can download a copy of a digital artwork but only one person holds the NFT, which is registered on a blockchain.

Someone followed a link to Banksy's official site and found a page with an NFT auction advertised. He bid nearly twice as much as his nearest competitor and got the NFT. He paid with etherium, which is more or less like bitcoin. But here's the joke: Banksy doesn't do NFTs. Someone hacked the site and put up this fake page, then walked away with the auction proceeds. There's apparently no way of getting the money back.

You couldn't make it up!
