Texans name Tyrod Taylor starting QB

Tyrod Taylor will be the Houston Texans' starting quarterback, head coach David Culley announced Monday, according to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790.

With Deshaun Watson's future uncertain, the Texans have focused primarily on Taylor during the buildup to the season. Watson is facing 22 lawsuits alleging sexual assault and inappropriate behavior, and 10 women have also filed criminal complaints against him.

The announcement of Taylor starting seems to confirm an earlier report that the Texans will make Watson inactive every week, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Taylor has previously opened five seasons as a team's starting quarterback. He held that position for the Buffalo Bills from 2015 to 2017, and the veteran was named the Week 1 starter in 2018 for the Cleveland Browns and in 2020 for the Los Angeles Chargers before a rookie replaced him both times.

The 32-year-old has started 47 career games and holds a 24-21-1 record. His best season came in 2015 when he was named to the Pro Bowl after throwing for 20 touchdowns with six interceptions.

Taylor signed a one-year contract with the Texans this past offseason after spending the past two years with the Chargers.

The Texans will face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1.
