Although the New England Patriots released Cam Newton last week, head coach Bill Belichick credited the quarterback for his work ethic and drive during an appearance on the "Greg Hill Show" on Tuesday.

"I have nothing but positive thoughts and feelings for Cam," Belichick said, according to NESN's Zack Cox. "He came in here, he worked hard. He gave us everything he had. Right now, our future is going to be Mac (Jones) at quarterback, and that is where we're going to go."

Belichick added that while trimming the roster is never an easy process, all the moves are aimed at doing what's best for the team.

"It's always tough to tell guys who have worked hard and have given you all they had that you're not able to keep them," the coach noted.

With Newton gone, first-round rookie Jones is scheduled to lead the Patriots in 2021. Belichick was asked about the possibility of keeping Newton as the team's backup, but he said he didn't feel it was the right move for the club.

"Yeah, there's always options and a lot of different things that you give, especially this time of year with so many players available before they all hit the practice squad," Belichick said. "But, yeah, in the end, we did what we felt was best."

Newton joined the Patriots prior to the 2020 season, compiling a 7-8 record as a starter. He threw eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
