We fact-checked the federal party leaders’ campaign claims. Just how honest were they? Here’s what we found
The Star's election fact check project launched with the election call in August as a way to keep Canadians informed and hold leaders accountable ahead of the Sept. 20 federal election. With the rise of post-truth politics in the U.S. and around the world, peddled by wildly dishonest figures like former U.S. president Donald Trump, Star fact-checker Lex Harvey wanted to see how Canadian politicians compare, one leader at a time.
- First up was Green Party Leader Annamie Paul:
I fact-checked everything Green Leader Annamie Paul said for a week. Here's what I found
Over the course of a week, Harvey watched every word of her press conferences, tuned into her radio and TV appearances, and kept tabs on her social media, all while fact-checking every single claim she made. How honest was Paul? Read the story to see how many claims were true, false or a stretch, and use our tool to filter claims by topic.
- On week two of the campaign our fact-checker turned her attention to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh:
I fact-checked everything NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said for a week. Here's what I found
Compared to Paul, Singh spoke about a much wider breadth of issues affecting Canadians - from fossil fuel subsidies and the carbon tax, to long-term-care reform and universal pharmacare, to the housing crisis and cellphone prices. Was he more or less honest? Read the story to see how many claims were true, false or a stretch, and use our tool to filter claims by topic.
- Week three of the election campaign, Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole was in the spotlight.
I fact-checked everything Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole said for a week. Here's what I found
O'Toole faced off against Liberal, Bloc and NDP Leaders during the first French-language debate. His statements at the debate, all of his news conferences and a virtual town hall were all under the microscope. Just how honest was O'Toole? Read the story to see how many claims were true, false or a stretch, and use our tool to filter claims by topic.
- The month-long fact-checking project wrapped up with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.
I fact-checked everything Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said for a week. Here's what I found
Because he's the incumbent, Trudeau is arguably treated with more scrutiny than any other leader, and he repeatedly faced tough questions about his past six years in office. So what was his dishonesty density" - the rate of fasle claims by speaking time - compared to the other leaders? Read the story to see how many claims were true, false or a stretch, and use our tool to filter claims by topic.
