Hamilton police say a man has died of his injuries after he was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run near Waterdown Friday night.

Speaking to The Spectator Saturday, Det. Const. Wes Wilson of the collision reconstruction unit said a Flamborough-area man was walking south on the shoulder of Centre Road near Concession Road 5 just after 8 p.m. Friday night when he was struck by a vehicle travelling northbound.

The driver involved in the crash fled the scene, said Wilson. A nearby witness that heard the collision and found the man on the road called 911 and provided first-aid until paramedics arrived.

Hamilton Paramedic Service Supt. Dave Thompson said the man was transported to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition with multisystem trauma."

The victim, 76, died of his injuries shortly after he arrived at the hospital, according to police.

Wilson said witnesses described the vehicle involved in the crash as a white SUV. Investigators are unsure of the make or model and do not have a description of the driver but believe the vehicle could be a Nissan.

The vehicle would also have front end damage, Wilson added.

Police have not released the name of the victim as they are still notifying next of kin. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the collision reconstruction unit at 905-546-4753 or 905-546-4755. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit tips online at crimestoppershamilton.com,

This is the city's 11th traffic fatality of the year and the fourth involving a pedestrian.
