SIU investigating incident at Gage and Main intersection
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has taken over the investigation into an incident in the area of Gage Avenue South and Main Street East Wednesday.
Earlier Wednesday, Hamilton police tweeted about an investigation in that area. The nature of Hamilton police's involvement in the incident is not clear. Hamilton police did not comment on the investigation and directed all inquiries to the SIU.
There are two distinct scenes: one at King Street East and Fairview Avenue and another other at Balsam Avenue South and Maplewood Avenue.
On Maplewood Avenue at Balsam, a black pickup truck with a crumpled hood was seen on a front lawn. Around the corner on Balsam, two white cars are surrounded in a cordoned-off area, including a badly damaged Toyota sedan. The front end is mangled and the windshield has shattered.
Before 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Hamilton police's traffic branch tweeted about a collision that shut down the intersection.
Area transit routes are on detour, including HSR Route 5 in both directions and routes 1 and 10 westbound.
Police ask anyone with information to call police at 905-546-4925, the SIU at 905-546-4925 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at crimestoppershamilton.com.
The SIU investigates incidents involving police in Ontario where someone dies, is seriously hurt or there is an allegation of sexual assault.
