What are the capabilities of a NIC?

I have in fact two NICs that I want to investigate. They are wireless and I want to know if they can work as access points and not just clients. I have the output of 'lspci -v' and 'lsusb' but I don't know what kind of string/info I should be looking for. What strings identify the capabilities of a NIC?
