Hamilton's Ward 6 streets to get additional traffic-calming measures to reduce speeding
Hamilton councillors have added further traffic-calming measures along Ward 6 roadways.
Four new dynamic speed signs were approved to be installed on Limeridge Road East, between Upper Ottawa Street and the Mountain Brow Boulevard at a cost of $19,000. The money will be taken from the Ward 6 Special Capital Re-Investment Reserve.
Earlier this year, two new dynamic" or digital speed signs were approved for Upper Ottawa Street, Fennell Avenue East, Concession Street/Mountain Brow Boulevard, Upper Gage Avenue, and four signs along Mohawk Road East at a cost of about $57,000. The signs are radar-activated that display a vehicle's approaching speed and/or message to slow down.
Ward 6 Coun. Tom Jackson said the signs have become very popular" within neighbourhoods because they are an additional tool to help what our police services are trying to do to increase traffic safety enforcement."
Meanwhile, up to two new speed cushions will be installed on Dulgaren Street between Eaglewood Drive/Chamomile Drive and Dysan Avenue. The cost is estimated to be about $14,000, which will be funded from the Ward 6 maintenance account.
Jackson applauded the road safety measures, which over the last year he has championed throughout his ward. Residents have complained over the years about speeding vehicles and cut-through traffic.
Last June, councillors approved 15 speed cushions on six streets as part of the city's 2021 traffic-calming program, including Birchview Drive, Gatineau Drive, Rideau Crescent, Larch Street, Princeton Drive and Moxley Drive, at a cost of about $84,000.
Jackson said the safety measures have been recommended by residents through petitions.
He said various speed cushions that have been approved earlier this year have been delayed, so he has urged patience to residents.
I'm just reminding all those constituents speed cushion construction will hopefully still be done this fall, long before Christmas," he said.
