Hamilton Day returns — this time taking aim at the pandemic economy

An event aimed at boosting the city's local economy is making a comeback nearly a century after its creation.

In a press release Wednesday, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce announced it will be bringing back Hamilton Day on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Created in October 1931 - in the midst of the Great Depression - the original event aimed to boost the local economy, as well as spirits, in Steeltown. Hosted just once, the chamber described the day as symbolic of a rallying spirit in the face of adversity."

At the time, The Spectator wrote that the Oct. 28 celebration was a great success. Retailers reported record-selling volumes across the city, while theatres, restaurants and hotels were bustling with business.

Ninety years later, the event will see a revival as a one-day celebration and chance for residents to support local businesses across the city, according to the release.

But instead of working to banish that tiresome word, depression," it will take aim at the pandemic," stated Keanin Loomis, president and CEO of the chamber, in a release.

Hamilton Day will inject much needed dollars into our local economy and reignite community pride," Loomis added.

For the event, the chamber is inviting all local businesses to take part - that includes restaurants, theatres, fitness studios, cafes and independent retailers.

Hamiltonians are encouraged to use the day to patronize local businesses or stop in at shops and spots that have just recently opened their doors.

Loomis said the chamber opted to hold the event a month later than its original date in hopes of reminding residents to shop local around the holiday season.

Let's not forget about our community's small independent business owners who have proven to be resilient through the pandemic," said Loomis.

According to a press release, Hamilton Day is a partnership with the Stoney Creek and Flamborough chambers of commerce and Hamilton's business improvement areas.

Due to the pandemic, the event is not festival-style, and patrons and businesses are reminded to follow COVID safety measures and protocols.
