what if I dd a partition that is being accessed?

I learned how to use dd, but something I haven't learned is whether I'm supposed to use it on a partition that is accessed and written to more or less continuously. I have my home partition in mind. I tried it and it appears to work, but logically it would seem to be a problem. How is dd supposed to copy the partition accurately when it constantly changes due to writes?
