The recent sexual assault allegations at Western University had such a profound effect on two Burlington high school students, they decided to take action.

Everyone talks, gossips, acknowledges and sometimes even judges, but few people stir the pot," said Lauren Cussons and Mina Aydemir.

The two Grade 10 Aldershot High School students are co-founders of Purple Day, a special day created by them for their school in support of survivors of sexual assault.

It felt to Lauren and I that no one likes bringing attention to issues like these when it happens, because it's an uncomfortable subject," said Mina, 15. So we decided to sort of light a torch, and encourage ourselves and those around us to not be afraid to stand for what you believe in."

Showing support is the greatest thing someone can do for a survivor of anything, said the teens.

That's why we wanted to start a movement like Purple Day; to show the survivors at Western that we hear them, and want to help them, not just gossip about them."

The students approached a couple of their teachers and the principal, who encouraged them to involve both Halton Women's Place and SAVIS (Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services) of Halton.

I am so impressed by these students and their take action' approach to this horrible situation at Western University. They took it upon themselves to make a statement rather than just staying silent and they want to educate as many youth - boys and girls - about what is happening on college and university campuses," said Carm Bozzo, HWP manager, development and communications.

The more educated youth are, we believe, assaults, harassments and abuse can be prevented. We at Halton Women's Place are honoured to be mentioned as a charity of choice and as a resource through Lauren and Mina's advocacy.

The students hope Purple Day becomes an annual event at Aldershot and that other schools may jump on board with their own similar initiative.
