Caledonia bypass blocked in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en pipeline opponents in B.C.

The Highway 6 Caledonia bypass has been blocked in solidarity with pipeline opponents in northern B.C. after reports that a Gitxsan First Nation chief was arrested surfaced on Twitter Wednesday.

The proposed Coastal GasLink pipeline route passes through the traditional lands of several First Nations, including the Wet'suwet'en and Gitxsan.

Land defence group 1492 Land Back Lane tweeted Thursday afternoon that the bypass had been blocked.

Highway 6 bypass through Haudenosaunee Territory in the Haldimand Tract blocked in solidarity with @Gidimten," the tweet reads.

The Gidimt'en camp was established as a checkpoint to bar access to pipeline company Coastal GasLink.

Haldimand OPP said in a tweet the bypass is closed between Argyle Street South and Greens Road.

Northbound traffic can detour using 4th Line, and southbound traffic can detour via Haldimand Road 66, police say.
