UPDATE: Man, 65, dies after crash near Barton and Wellington
A 65-year-old man has died following a crash that has closed a stretch of Barton and Wellington streets.
In an update on Thursday just after 12 p.m. from the scene, Hamilton police said the victim's family has been notified.
The police collision reconstruction unit is investigating the fatal collision in the area of Wellington Street North and Barton Street East and a large portion of that area has been shut down to traffic.
Police were called shortly after 8 a.m. to a crash involving a person on a motorized scooter and a dump truck. Police say the driver of the dump truck remained on scene and is co-operating.
Hamilton paramedic Supt. Dave Thompson said paramedics transported a male patient to hospital without vital signs.
The man died in hospital, police said.
Drivers are being asked to use an alternative route and avoid the area. Police expect road closures to remain in place for several hours.
Barton Street East is closed between Ferguson Avenue North and Victoria Avenue North, and Wellington Street North is closed between Birge Street and Cannon Street East.
More to come.
