Hamilton police are investigating a crash in which a pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday evening in Stoney Creek, the second such fatality this week in the city.

Staff Sgt. Mark Mayner said an 84-year-old woman was crossing Barton Street East at Varga Drive when she was struck by an SUV travelling west on Barton shortly after 8 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, Mayner said.

Police closed off Barton between Bow Valley Drive and Bell Manor Street from 8:30 p.m. Saturday until after 1:20 a.m. Sunday.

The fatal crash follows another this week in which a man on a mobility scooter was struck by a dump truck on the opposite end of the same street.

In that crash, the 65-year-old man was using a crosswalk on Barton Street East at Wellington Street North, in central Hamilton, when he was struck and killed on Oct. 28.

These are the city's 13th and 14th traffic fatalities of the year.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact, Det. Const. Wes Wilson of the collision reconstruction unit at 905-546-4755, or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at crimestoppershamilton.com.
