The Las Vegas Raiders released wide receiver Henry Ruggs after he was charged in connection with a fatal car crash Tuesday morning, the team announced.

Ruggs was booked into jail on DUI resulting in death and reckless driving charges, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He's scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.

Police responded to the crash at 3:39 a.m. local time. The preliminary investigation indicated that the front of Ruggs' Chevrolet Corvette collided with the rear of a Toyota Rav4. Responding fire department personnel located a deceased victim in the latter vehicle.

Ruggs remained on the scene and "showed signs of impairment" before being transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the police report.

The victim was identified as a 23-year-old woman. Ruggs' girlfriend, Kiara Washington, was a passenger in his vehicle and was treated for serious injuries.

Ruggs' attorney, David Chesnoff, released a statement following the accident.

"On behalf of our client Henry Ruggs III we are conducting our own investigation as of this writing and ask everyone to reserve judgment until all the facts are gathered," Chesnoff said.

The Raiders selected Ruggs with the No. 12 overall pick in last year's draft.
