Nine things to do this weekend in the Hamilton area

Time is ticking as we fall back one hour Sunday morning.

Don't forget to check your smoke and CO detector batteries when you change your clocks at 2 a.m., Nov. 7.

You can expect cool and cloudy November days this weekend with daytime temperatures reaching around 10 C and a chance of frost for the overnights. Environment Canada isn't calling for any rain.

Here are nine more things to know this weekend for the Hamilton area.

WATERDOWN LEGION POPPYS

To mark the 100th anniversary of the poppy becoming the symbol of Remembrance Day, the Waterdown Legion, 79 Hamilton St. N., has created a lawn sign for $20 (cash or cheque) which goes to the Waterdown Branch Poppy Trust Fund. Donations of $25 or more are eligible for an official donation tax receipt. All proceeds go toward helping Veterans and youth. You can pick up a sign or two in front of the Legion's cenotaph daily until Saturday from 3 to 9 p.m. For questions, please email rgthomas@cogeco.ca. If picking up a sign is a challenge, they will deliver.

STEP UP FOR WAYSIDE

The Step Up for Wayside fundraiser has moved to FirstOntario Centre on Saturday and there is still time for you to join in. Participants can do their walk/run on a special track at the arena, can join in virtually or join from Bayfront Park where there will be an outdoor walk/run. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 1 as part of Step Up for Wayside.

This year's honorary event co-chairs are renowned two-time Canadian Olympic runner Reid Coolsaet and Michael O'Riordan, medical journalist/Hamilton community runner. The doors open for screening/registration at 9 a.m., 101 York Blvd. Visit waysidehouseham.com/stepupforwayside

POTTERY SALE

Get a jump on some holiday shopping this weekend at pottery show and sale. The Potters Guild of Hamilton and Region is hosting their annual sale Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Merritt Hall at the Ancaster Fairgrounds. You will need to book your time slot in advance, visit hamiltonpotters.ca

GREENHOUSE

The mum show may be over but there remains so much to see in Hamilton's Tropical Greenhouse at Gage Park, 1000 Main St. E. The 1,300-square-metre, fully accessible greenhouse features a collection of subtropical plants, unique species and palm trees. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., admission is free. Parking if available off Lawrence Road beside the tennis courts.

BOOK FESTIVAL

The third annual Marvin Caplan Jewish Book Festival is online Nov. 6 to Nov. 18. The events features 12 outstanding works from the year's most sought-after and talked about authors. All author sessions are presented live online via Zoom, with the books selected from the 2021-22 catalogue of titles issued by the Jewish Book Council. Each author talk is $10 with the books priced individually. Books can be ordered and picked up in advance at the Hamilton Jewish Federation, 1605 Main St. W. FARM OPEN HOUSE

Lickety Spit Fibre Farm in Binbrook is inviting you to a day at the farm on Saturday. The public is invited out from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., 107 Binbrook Rd., for the return of the annual open house. See the farm animals and fibre spinners and weavers showing how the animals' fleeces can be processed after they're shorn. A cash only Dog Got It hotdog cart will be available. Remember to dress for the weather for this outdoor event. DOUGHNUT DASH SIGN UP

There's expected to be a lot of fun happening down at the waterfront next weekend. You can still sign up to participate in the second annual Doughnut Dash 5K and kids run on Nov. 13. And, yes. Expect doughnuts at the finish line. Walkers start t 10:45 a.m. with the kids run/walk at 11 and the 5K starting at 11:15. WALKING TOUR

GAME DAYS

Ticats' are home Friday night when the BC Lions come to Tim Hortons Field. ticats.ca

It's double home-game fun this weekend with your Bulldogs hosting both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday, 4 p.m., versus Sudbury Wolves and Sunday, 2 p.m., versus the Barrie Colts. FirstOntario Centre, 101 York Blvd. Tickets start at $15. Get them at the box office or ticketmaster.ca.
