A new sweets shop has opened at the corner of Barton and Elgin, in central Hamilton, offering treats fit for royalty.

Rows of nut-filled shredded pastry bird's nests," bite-size sugar syrup desserts and layered baklava treats line the counter at Queen Desserts.

Obada Almetheb and Mohammad Alqaai opened their corner dessert, coffee and ice cream shop on Nov. 6, with a weekend-long grand opening party.

The co-owners were family friends in Syria before they moved to Canada in 2016.

Sharing a love for deserts, Almetheb and Alqaai intend to feature their mothers' recipes of popular treats from back home.

Queen Desserts' all-halal pastry creations, including Middle Eastern desserts as well as Western-style treats, are made in-house at the 144 Barton St. E. bakery.

Get sweets to go, or dine in with a coffee, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
