rsync issues. (perhaps OT?)
by Franklin from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5RQH9)
Hi all.
I have a local copy of the -current tree that I update using rsync via a shell script. I've been doing this using the same mirror for over 10 years without any issues.
I am in another state (US) for a bit and brought my slackware box with me to keep me occupied. I tried to run my -current update script when I first got here and recieved the following error:
Code:root@slackbox:~# check-current -c
Checking...
rsync: did not see server greeting
rsync error: error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at main.c(1814) [Receiver=3.2.3]Not entirely sure what this meant, I decided to wait it out and see if it might be an issue on the mirror side of things. Not seeing any change, I began to play with other mirrors to see if I could get things to work.
I did find other mirrors that would work, but found them a bit behind my usual source. In addition, I found that I could sometimes get my preferred mirror to work. In fact, I was able to update the latest -current update as of 9 November without issue, but then checking again afterward got the same error. Other mirrors gave me the same error as well at times.
I'm basically looking for some idea as to what this error means and whether this might be something I can fix on my end, or if this is an issue with the mirror site. I'm tempted to think this is an issue with poor internet connection somewhere along the line, but the inconsistent results make it difficult to know for sure where the problem lies. Given that my other internet activity - Netflix, remote work over vpn etc. - appear to be working fine, I have a hard time believing that my connection is the culprit, but it may be.
I did google the error, but did not see anything helpful (or did not understand what I was looking at ;)) Apologies is this is OT. Feel free to move as you see fit.
TIA
