so someone thinks Ubuntu might disappear?

I am posting this question in the Ubuntu forum because although it appears to concern Linux Mint Debian Edition, IMO it's actually an Ubuntu question. The LMDE developers state that LMDE's raison d'etre is just in case Ubuntu "were to disappear." Do they have a credible reason to believe it might? Has the funding become shaky?
