"It means a lot," Ovechkin said after the Capitals' 5-3 win, according to NHL.com's Tom Gulitti. "When you start playing hockey, when you come to the NHL, you never thought you'd be in that position with those names.

"It's a special moment with my parents, my wife, kids, obviously."

The 36-year-old has enjoyed a blistering start to the 2021-22 campaign, erupting for 12 goals and 12 assists in 14 games. He's now just 24 tallies behind Jaromir Jagr in third place and 59 behind Gordie Howe for No. 2 on the list.

As for Wayne Gretzky's all-time record? Ovechkin sits 152 goals behind The Great One's mark of 894.
