Newton to receive majority of 1st-team reps, could start vs. Washington
Cam Newton's first start since rejoining the Carolina Panthers could come in Week 11.
Head coach Matt Rhule said Monday that Newton will receive the majority of the first-team reps in practice this week ahead of Sunday's game against the Washington Football Team, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Rhule said Newton will only start in Week 11 if he's ready, according to team reporter Darin Gantt.
If he's not, P.J. Walker will be under center versus Washington, per Steve Reed of The Associated Press.
Newton, who signed with the Panthers on a reported one-year deal last week, had an eventful return in the 34-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Serving as the backup, Newton scored on each of his first two touches: a two-yard score near the goal line and a short pass to Robby Anderson. Newton finished with nine snaps played.
If he does receive the start Sunday, it'd be Newton's first with the Panthers since Week 2 of the 2019 season. The Week 11 contest would also see the former No. 1 overall pick go up against his former coach, Ron Rivera. The Washington headmaster spent 2011-2019 in Carolina and used his first pick with the franchise on Newton.
Newton is expected to play a big role for the 5-5 Panthers as they try to make a push for a playoff spot.
