how can i update an app (guake) in ubuntu 18.04?

hi.
-using 'guake --version' in the terminal i see i am using version 3.0.5
-but i see they are up to 3.8.1: https://github.com/Guake/guake/releases
-the software centre in ubuntu shows no updates are available
-guake documentation says only "sudo apt install guake" https://guake.readthedocs.io/en/stab...hlight=install
i have found this to be a problem in general i.e. i can see a new version is available but i have no clue how to apply it. Uninstall and re-install? Use "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade"? - i see people doing this all the time
