will Elementary OS work on my MB Pro 2010, running a core 2 duo

Hello. Wanted to ask if I can upgrade to EOS Odin. I currently have a MB pro mid 2010, core 2 duo 64 bit processor, 8 GB ram, 1 tb SSD.
I currently run EOS Hera on it, but I'd like to update if possible. Besides, I'm going to have to reinstall EOS when I put my new SSD in the MB Pro. I want to split it half with OS X High SIerra (I have to get some software that requires it), half with EOS.
I'm not sure, based on what I've seen from EOS, that I can keep Hera -- or should I even try to, if I can upgrade to Odin?
Is there any way I can put EOS on the new SSD before I put it in the MB Pro, if that would even make sense? I currently have a firewire 800 connection to the computer.
Any and all advice is welcom.
