Beginner's question about KVM
by Micik from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5SF0X)
Hello guys,
in my work I use virtual machines a lot (I'm not an It guy), but they are either on VirtualBox or VmWare. These are type 2 hypervisors and require fully functional host OS. I understand that because of this there is a performance penalty.
I have read about KVM and learned that this is Type 1 hypervisor, which means that it can provide "near bear metal" performance.
Now my question is how to install this? I know that for example ESXi is linux OS itself and it installs on "bear metal" and I know that KVM is consisting of packages that need to be downloaded and installed on existing OS.
So since I most of the time use virtual machines and almost never host OS (use mainly legacy OS such as WinXP Redhat Linux 9.0 Shrike and Solaris 10) and have a new Lenovo laptop with no OS at all, I wonder what is the best possible approach regarding the performance.
What OS I should install with minimal configuration to run KVM on it in order to install other legacy OSs inside virtual machines?
I must admit that I don't have clear picture regarding the KVM. I have found many tutorials such as how to install KVM on ubuntu 20.04 and similar, but I don't want my host OS to eat a lot of resources.
Thank you!
