"We have made these schedule changes based on medical advice and after discussion with the NFLPA as we are seeing a new, highly transmissible form of the virus this week resulting in a substantial increase in cases across the league," the NFL said in a statement Friday.

The Cleveland Browns currently have more than 20 players on the COVID-19 list, including pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney, the latest of 11 starters to test positive Friday.

The Browns also placed quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Case Keenum on the reserve earlier this week, leaving Nick Mullens as their top option under center. It's still unclear whether Mayfield or Keenum will be able to play Monday.

The Los Angeles Rams and Washington Football Team also each have over 20 players on the COVID-19 list.

Los Angeles moved nine players onto the reserve Thursday, pushing the team's total number to 25. Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., cornerback Jalen Ramsey, linebacker Von Miller, and running back Darrell Henderson are among the Rams players sent to the COVID-19 list this week.

Washington also lost its top two quarterbacks after Taylor Heinicke tested positive for COVID-19 and joined Kyle Allen on the reserve list Friday.

This marks the first time the NFL postponed games this season due to COVID-19.

The NFL updated its COVID-19 guidelines Thursday, relaxing the return-to-play rules to make it easier for vaccinated and asymptomatic players to be activated following a positive test.

In July, the league enhanced its protocols to encourage vaccination, adding that any game that can't be rescheduled due to a COVID-19 outbreak among unvaccinated players will result in a forfeit by the club responsible for the outbreak.
