The Jacksonville Jaguars fired former head coach Urban Meyer for cause and do not intend to pay him the remaining four years of his contract, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Jeff Darlington.

Jacksonville's decision to dismiss the first-time NFL coach was the result of a culmination of incidents rather than just one event, Schefter and Darlington report.

Meyer was fired earlier this week after embroiling himself in numerous controversies. He reportedly had run-ins with players and staff, causing tension in the organization. Former Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo said Meyer kicked him during a practice in August.

A spokesman for Jaguars owner Shad Khan said the decision was made following the team's 20-0 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. However, the club decided it was best to wait until after the conclusion of the NFL owners' meetings, which took place this week.

Khan's spokesman also noted that Meyer's termination wasn't triggered by Lambo's claim but by "deliberation over many weeks and a thorough analysis" of Meyer's tenure.

The 57-year-old coach also landed in hot water earlier this year after a viral video showed him at a bar with a woman who was not his wife.

Jacksonville struggled on the field under Meyer, compiling a 2-11 record through his 13 games. His on-field decision-making was called into question as he was criticized for running back James Robinson's lack of playing time.

Meyer built a reputation as a great college coach after leading the likes of Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and Ohio State to success.
