Xorg dying while new window manager is getting started.

i've updated a few gentoo installs i have this week. they had Xorg version maybe 5 years old on them. the new versions of Xorg work mostly ok, but when using fluxbox or blackbox and trying to restart with a different window manager, like enlightenment, or icewm, X kicks out after a few seconds after the new window manager actually starts and is working. Xorg says it lost the connection, but it didn't. some new default setting must be causing X to timeout faster than it used to. i am not using a dm like light-dm or xdm or kdm. this may take an xorg developer to solve this, but i'm putting it out here.
occasionaly windowmaker starts fast enough to not time out.
