The Minnesota Vikings will play Sunday's crucial game against the Los Angeles Rams without star running back Dalvin Cook.

Vikings offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak said Thursday that Cook won't be available for Week 16 after the team placed him on the COVID-19 reserve.

Cook has been following protocols for unvaccinated players this season, according to Courtney Cronin of ESPN. Unvaccinated players must remain sidelined for a minimum of 10 days after testing positive for COVID-19.

"Big challenge not having Dalvin," Kubiak said. He added: "Unfortunately, I know he won't be available, but we've been through this this year already, you know, and guys have stepped up."

Cook currently leads the NFC with 1,067 rushing yards (4.7 per carry) despite missing three games this season due to injury. The three-time Pro Bowler, who's now topped 1,000 yards on the ground in three straight campaigns, has also racked up six touchdowns in 2021.

Alexander Mattison will take over at running back for Minnesota versus Los Angeles. Mattison, who the team activated from the COVID-19 list on Wednesday, has rushed for 432 yards (3.7 per attempt) and two touchdowns this year.

The 7-7 Vikings currently hold the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoff picture.
