San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has a chipped bone and torn ligament in his right thumb, making his status uncertain for Week 17, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo will be re-evaluated Wednesday to determine his availability for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, according to Rapoport.

Garoppolo sustained the injury in the second quarter of Thursday's loss to the Tennessee Titans. He reportedly missed practice Monday.

The 30-year-old passed for 322 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the defeat. Garoppolo has thrown for 3,494 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while completing 68% of his pass attempts this season.

Garoppolo's absence would open the door for backup Trey Lance to start in Week 17. The rookie had "the best consecutive four weeks of practice since we've had him," Shanahan said Monday, according to The Athletic's Matt Barrows.

Lance's last start came in a Week 5 loss against the Arizona Cardinals. He finished the contest with 192 passing yards and one interception, along with 89 rushing yards.
