Colts place Wentz on COVID-19 list

The Indianapolis Colts have placed quarterback Carson Wentz on the COVID-19 list.

Wentz, who's unvaccinated, still has an opportunity to play Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders after the NFL modified its COVID-19 protocol Tuesday.

Under the new rules, regardless of vaccination status, players who test positive can stop isolating after five days if they haven't had a fever in the last 24 hours and any other symptoms they experienced have resolved or improved. The previous protocol required unvaccinated players to isolate for 10 days following a positive COVID-19 test.

Wentz is 9-6 under center this campaign. The 29-year-old has completed 62.8% of his passes while tossing 25 touchdowns against six interceptions.

With the veteran signal-caller potentially out, next in line to start is rookie Sam Ehlinger, who the Colts drafted in the sixth round in April. The Texas product has yet to attempt a regular-season pass in the NFL.

Indianapolis is also discussing calling retired quarterback Philip Rivers, according to The Athletic's Zak Keefer.

Rivers posted an 11-5 record with the team last year before announcing his retirement in the offseason.

Sunday's matchup between the Colts and Raiders has significant playoff implications for both teams. Indy's currently the No. 5 seed in the AFC, while Las Vegas is 8-7 and in the hunt for the conference's No. 7 seed.
