Order of Hamilton recipients honoured
Mayor Fred Eisenberger recognized 11 city residents with Order of Hamilton awards as part of a virtual New Year's Levee.
The award of merit, created in 2019, is meant to honour exceptional" volunteer contributions by citizens of Hamilton.
Those honoured received a medal in a COVID-safe prior ceremony that was recorded and broadcast as part of a virtual event Jan. 2. The recipients include:
Randy and Susan Bassett: The couple co-founded Opening Hearts, a charity that provides support to children and families with special needs, a decade ago.
Margaret Bennett: The community leader in the Stinson neighbourhood helped keep residents connected and involved despite pandemic restrictions, including organizing a COVID-safe spring cleanup.
Zaigham Shafiq Butt: The longtime Hamilton volunteer and member of the Pakistani Business Association recently helped launch a mobile directory for members and was a part of the association's partnership with the Crescent Food Bank.
Ward Campbell: A leader in the capital campaign for the new Putman Family YWCA, Campbell helped leverage $500,000 for the creation of 50 new units of housing and support for marginalized women and families.
Zobia Jawed: The wastewater expert has been at the forefront of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic via a novel sewage-testing approach and is a community leader in promoting equity and diversity through her leadership with the Pakistani Business Association and Healthy Youth Network.
Alex Moroz: The longtime Rotarian has provided leadership in child literacy, Hamilton Food Share efforts and on behalf of the Cathy Wever School community.
Nicholas Scime: The dedicated volunteer has helped raise funds for worthy causes like Interval House and Neighbour to Neighbour. He has also taught healthy cooking programs at no charge.
Edmund Shaker: The arts supporter has had leadership or board roles with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, Theatre Aquarius and the Art Gallery of Hamilton and has worked to aid waterfront renewal efforts in the city.
Mark Wu: The youth sports champion has coached youth volleyball, organized the International Children's Games and worked to promote mental health wellness through sport.
Robert John Young: The Flamborough Hockey Association volunteer is active in organizing tournaments for hundreds of young athletes and works as a team trainer with local girls hockey.
