49ers' Shanahan to keep Week 18 QB decision under wraps
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan won't reveal a starting quarterback for their crucial regular-season finale versus the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
Jimmy Garoppolo had a throwing session Tuesday after missing the previous game with a thumb injury. Rookie Trey Lance started in his absence and threw two touchdowns to lead San Francisco past the Houston Texans.
The 49ers hold the last available playoff spot in the NFC entering Week 18. They can punch their ticket to the postseason with a win over the Rams, but a loss would open the door for the New Orleans Saints to steal their spot.
Garoppolo said Wednesday he experienced soreness in his thumb after throwing but called Tuesday's session "pretty good." The veteran reportedly sustained a chipped bone and torn ligament in his right thumb in Week 16.
Garoppolo has started all 14 games he's been available to play in this season despite the arrival of Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 draft.
